eBooks are the digital way to read a book. They are the electronic version of regular printed book, though some may lack the illustrations, and are read on some sort of electronic device, such as a desktop computer, e-reader, mobile phone, or laptop. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of different electronic formats that are being used, and some of them are only functional on certain types of computer hardware. Amazon's Kindle eReader will only read their own published e-books, and those e-books are not compatible with other e-readers. Follett books have their own eReader that works with their e-books and is used when accessing them from our Destiny catalog. Barnes & Noble, Border's, public libraries, and online collections may or may not work with your particular computer or e-reader software. Besides the Kindle, there are other hardware solutions: Sony's eReader, the Barnes & Noble Nook, and computer software like Adobe's e-reader. This will, hopefully, fix itself just like the video formatting became standardized. For now, it's still somewhat of a Wild West situation. There is a free downloadable program called Calibre for converting e-books from one format to another. It can be downloaded from Cnet at http://download.cnet.com/Calibre/3000-2125_4-10910277.html?tag=mncol;2.
